Description
When you bake apple crisp with oatmeal streusel, cinnamon-spiced apples meet a buttery oat topping that gets wonderfully crispy in the oven. Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream and watch your family come back for seconds.
Ingredients
Scale
Apple Filling:
- 6 medium apples
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup light brown sugar, packed
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Oatmeal Streusel Topping:
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup light brown sugar, packed
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
Instructions
- Set your oven to 350°F and coat a 9×13-inch baking dish lightly with butter or cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine your 6 sliced apples with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, ½ cup granulated sugar, ¼ cup packed brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, ½ teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon of flour, then toss everything together until the apples are fully coated.
- Pour your apple mixture into the prepared dish and spread it into an even layer.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of old-fashioned oats, ¾ cup of flour, ¾ cup of packed brown sugar, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon of salt.
- Cut ½ cup of cold, cubed butter into your dry mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the texture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
- Distribute your streusel topping evenly across the apples, breaking up any larger clumps as you go.
- Bake at 350°F for 40 to 45 minutes until your topping turns golden brown and you see the filling bubbling around the edges of the dish.
- Let your crisp rest for at least 10 minutes before you serve it, which helps the filling set slightly and makes it easier to portion.
Notes
- Cut your apples into even, roughly ¼-inch thick slices so they cook at the same rate and don’t have hard or mushy pieces.
- Keep your butter cold and work quickly when making the streusel topping, since warm butter creates a dense topping instead of that desired crumbly texture.
- Watch for bubbling at the edges of your baking dish around the 40-minute mark to know when the filling is ready, as oven temperatures vary and this signal matters more than exact time.
- For a gluten-free version, swap regular flour for a 1-to-1 gluten-free baking flour in both the filling and topping, and your crisp bakes the same way with no other adjustments needed.
